The Grand Concourse / Sixth Ave subway train opened from 205th street to Hudson terminal (WTC) on 12/15/1940. After 1940 up until 1954, the route became 205th street to Church Ave. On 10/30/1954, a ramp was connected between Church Ave and Ditmas Ave allowing the to go all the way to Stillwell Ave via the Culver el. On 11/26/1967, The Chrystie street connection allowed IND trains to cross the Manhattan bridge on its way to Brooklyn. From this, the train was extended into the Fourth Ave subway and Brighton line. The route became 205th street to Stillwell Ave.

On 4/26/1986, the was routed to the Broadway subway due to Manhattan bridge troubles. The went back to the Sixth Ave subway but removed from the Brighton line on 3/30/1995 and put on the West End el. It returned to the Brighton line on 12/19/1995, but left in 2001 because of Manhattan bridge problems once again. Finally, on 2/22/2004, all four tracks of the Manhattan bridge are functioning. As a result, the and switched southern routes. The route of the train became 205th street to Stillwell Ave via the West End el. Many know the West End el from TV shows and movies like John Travolta walking under the el in "Saturday Night Fever" (1977) , the opening credits to "Welcome Back Kotter" (1976) , Gene Hackman in "The French Connection" (1971) , "The American Gangster" (2007) and more!
