The Queens Blvd - Sixth Ave subway train first opened from Parsons Blvd to Hudson terminal (WTC) on 12/15/1940. It was extended to 169th street evenings and nights on 1/10/1944. In the late 1950s, the was cutback to Broadway - Lafayette due to a construction ramp being built leading to the Chrystie street connection later on in 1967.

On 10/30/1954, the went from 179th street to 34th street and the went from 205th street beyond Church Ave to the Culver el to Stillwell Ave. Years later, the replaced the along the Culver el on 11/26/1967. This is the route the train follows to this day from 179th street to Stillwell Ave via the Culver el on McDonald Ave. The Culver el section from Ditmas Ave to West 8th street along McDonald Ave was used in the movie, "The Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3" starring John Travolta in 2009.

From 1990 - 1997, the was sent to the new 63rd street tunnel to 21st street - Queensbridge during the evening hours. It was sent back to the older 53rd street tunnel due to track work on the 63rd street tunnel 1997 - 2001. On 12/17/2001, the was sent back to the new 63rd street tunnel for good while the used the 53rd street tunnel with the train. During the Stillwell Ave upgrade of 9/7/2002, the terminated at Ave X while Neptune Ave, West 8th st, and Stillwell were being rebuilt. The returned to Stillwell Ave on 5/23/2004 and is considered one of the fastest express lines in the entire subway system.
