SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The IND division (Independent) was a municipal subway from the very beginning. Originally the competition to the IRT and especially BMT companies, they purposely built their subways only blocks away from the older els to eventually rid many of them. They succeeded too, eliminating the Fulton St el in favor of the and trains just below the original el. Gone too are the Myrtle Ave, Lexington Ave, Fifth Ave, and Third Ave els for the same reasons. Other times, former BMT els were assimilated into the IND network like the Culver line in Brooklyn being connected with the train. Also, the surviving remnants of the Fulton St el were connected with the train and former LIRR tracks to the Rockaways. In some areas, the els are still in existence with the IND subway on the same block like the train elevated near Yankee Stadium with the train directly below as a subway. Queensboro Plaza train station would be another example where the IRT train and BMT and trains are on the el while the IND subway , , , , and are directly below as a subway.
