THE SIXTH AVE SUBWAY - JAMAICA EL (KK TRAIN)

IRT: BMT: IND:
SUBWAY TRIVIA: THE LIRR IN RELATION TO BROOKLYN ELS:
SUBWAY LINES: HOME PAGE:

The train was created as a way of joining the Sixth Ave subway with the Broadway / Jamaica el. This connection was possible as a result of the Chrystie street connection. This allowed the IND tracks to merge with the BMT and vice versa beginning on 7/1/1968. The service went from 57st / Sixth Ave to 168 st, Jamaica. On 1/2/1973, the was renamed and went from 57st / Sixth to Broadway Junction - Eastern Parkway. The Jamaica el ceased operations north of Queens Blvd to make way for the new Archer Ave extension years later. The discontinued service 8/27/1976.

As of late 2009, there was talk of re-using the old set of tracks from 1968 called the Chrystie Street connection to connect the with the line. This unused connection between the BMT Nassau Street Line and the IND Sixth Avenue Line would change the terminus from being Second Avenue. Instead, the would leave Broadway - Lafayette Street and serve the current line stations from Essex Street in Manhattan to Metropolitan Avenue in Queens. (In a way, this will be similar to what the train was from 1968 - 1976; a combination of the Sixth Ave subway with the Jamaica el, only now there would be the added bonus of going further along the Myrtle Ave el and tie in with the Queens Blvd subway from the Sixth Ave side!) As of 3/19/20010, it was decided from the public they wanted this merged line to 'still' be called the M train since the letter has been used since 1934. The only difference will be that it'll be an orange to show that it's part of the Sixth Ave line! (Another BMT line being merged with the IND like what happened in years past!) It was renamed the Myrtle / Queens Blvd subway. The last day for the was 6/25/2010 and the merged with that route. Thus on 6/25/2010, the now connects with the Sixth Ave and Queens Blvd subways to 71 Continental Ave replacing the train in that area.

The OLDEST sixteen stations still in operation on the Broadway el, (today's , and ) are Marcey Ave, Hewes st, Lorimer st, Flushing Ave, Myrtle Ave, Kosciusko street, Gates Ave, Halsey street, Chauncey street, Broadway Junction, Alabama Ave, Van Sicklen Ave, Cleveland Ave, Norwood Ave, Crescent street, and Cypress Hills. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THESE ARE THE OLDEST SURVIVING STATIONS SINCE THE DAYS OF STEAM; 119 TO 127 YEARS OLD! (as of 2012)
